Heart & Hustle: A Day in the Life of a Certified Pharmacy Technician
Behind every prescription is a team ensuring patients receive the right medication at the right time. Pharmacy technicians are central to that process, and for anyone interested in a healthcare career that doesn’t require a decade of education, the pharmacy tech role is one of the most accessible paths to meaningful, lasting work.
Just ask Rebecca Kennett. She wasn’t necessarily looking for it, but pharmacy still found her.
“I was working in the hospital kitchen, and because of my work ethic, I was approached about joining the pharmacy team,” she recalls. “I applied for the position and got the job.”
That was nearly three decades ago. Today, Rebecca oversees dozens of pharmacy technicians across multiple departments.
More than counting pills
The pharmacy technician role has changed dramatically since Rebecca started out.
“It used to feel more like we were just doing the job,” she says, “but now we have a very important role, equally critical to what the pharmacist does.”
Pharmacy technicians prepare and dispense medications, compound sterile IV treatments, manage controlled substances, and run technology-driven workflows. Every step demands precision. “If we don’t do something correctly, there’s a chance of an error reaching the patient,” Rebecca explains. “We are so deliberate and careful because that’s what keeps our patients safe.”
Pharmacy tech career advancement: What it really looks like
Rebecca didn’t have any prior experience before she joined the pharmacy team, but she built skills over time through hands-on training and mentorship.
“I like a challenge,” she says. “I won’t stop until I figure something out.”
Before long, her colleagues started coming to her to ask questions, or get her help with solving problems—everything from medication preparation to sterile compounding. Then she became their supervisor.
“You have to earn it,” Rebecca says, “but if you want it, you can get there. And if someone on my team tells me they want to advance, I’ll do whatever I can to help them.”
Many healthcare organizations now offer structured pathways that allow clinicians to take on specialized roles, earn additional certifications, and expand their responsibilities over time. For those who are committed to working hard, showing up with curiosity and a drive to succeed, pharmacy tech career advancement isn’t just possible. It’s extremely likely.
“I didn’t think I’d ever become a supervisor,” Rebecca admits. “It’s a nice reminder that you can do anything you want if you put your mind to it.”
A quiet kind of patient care
That includes making real connections with patients, even without the face-to-face contact that comes with other healthcare roles. People often don’t think of pharmacy techs as having a role in direct care, but they’re an essential part of the process.
It’s that sense of purpose that’s kept Rebecca in the field for so long. “I help patients behind the scenes all day, every day,” Rebecca says. “That’s what makes this work so exciting.”
For anyone looking for a career with room to grow while doing work that matters, pharmacy may be worth exploring. It wasn’t part of Rebecca’s plan, but she’s grateful for stumbling across this unexpected opportunity: “It can be a stepping stone or it can be your career. There’s so much you can do.”
