Thinking about a healthcare career change? Nontraditional students are the future of the industry
Some of the most impactful, compassionate, and committed healthcare professionals are those who took a different path. Maybe they raised kids, supported aging parents, worked in other industries, or simply waited until the time was right to make a healthcare career change.
Those nontraditional students bring something special to the field, and the industry needs more of them.
Life experience is a superpower.
Healthcare isn’t just clinical. It’s human. And no textbook teaches empathy like life does.
A patient navigating a new diagnosis needs to understand their treatment plan, absolutely. But in addition, they need someone to help them see that it’s possible to continue living life despite that new diagnosis.
Nontraditional students are particularly effective at this because they have tons of experience in:
- Communicating under pressure.
- Problem-solving in real time.
- Building trust quickly.
While these students may not have worn scrubs before, they aren’t starting from scratch. They’re building on a solid foundation of what they already know.
Age diversity strengthens the whole team.
Healthcare is most effective when teams reflect the communities they serve. And that means having people of different ages, backgrounds, and life stages working side-by-side.
Nontraditional students bring a sense of calm, maturity, and wisdom to the care team—not to mention unmatched focus and clarity. They know what’s at stake, and their dedication shows up in the classroom, in clinicals, and on the job.
Age is not a barrier. In healthcare, it’s an asset.
Parents and caregivers: There’s room for you here.
If you’ve ever thought, I’d love to go into healthcare but I have kids to think about, we hear you—and you’re not alone.
Many CPT Program participants are parents, caregivers, or adults of all ages balancing multiple responsibilities. The Caring Gene® Program was built with those things in mind.
We provide:
- Full tuition coverage, as well as funds to cover books and academic fees.
- A case manager who’ll work with you from the start of your program until you’ve completed the service commitment.
- Support services, including tutoring and connections to community resources.
What’s more, we don’t expect you to do it alone, because life doesn’t stop when you go back to school. The CPT Program is designed to meet you where you are and walk with you toward the future you want.
The industry is changing, and it needs you.
Healthcare and behavioral health systems across New York State are facing real challenges: workforce shortages, increased patient demand, and a rising need for culturally competent, emotionally present care.
Organizations are actively looking for:
- People from underserved or underrepresented communities.
- People who never thought healthcare would be “for them.”
- People who bring something different to the table.
Your background doesn’t disqualify you. It’s exactly what makes you valuable.
It’s never too late to start.
We’re supporting CPT Program participants who left college 20 years ago but decided to come back and finish strong. Parents who are taking classes while raising kids. Baristas and front desk staff who left retail or hospitality because they wanted something more meaningful.
And they are thriving.
Before long, they will enter the workforce as Community Health Workers. Medical Assistants. LPNs and RNs. Patient Care Managers.
And they’re doing it with the full support of the entire Caring Gene® community.
Final thought: You belong here.
If you’ve ever felt too old, too busy, too late, or too “different” to make a healthcare career change, this is your sign.
You are exactly what the industry needs.
You’ve lived, and you’ve cared, and you’ve overcome. And now you’re ready to harness all of that experience into a career that’ll change lives—including your own.
