Overview
Respiratory Therapists (RTs) work with all types and ages of patients, ranging from premature infants to elderly people whose lungs are diseased. Practicing under the direction of a physician, respiratory therapists assume primary responsibility for all respiratory care, therapeutic treatments, and diagnostic procedures. They also supervise respiratory therapy technicians.
Work Environment
Respiratory Therapists (RTs work in acute care hospitals (about 75%), diagnostic laboratories, sleep disorder centers, rehabilitation, long-term acute care and skilled nursing facilities, patients’ homes, physicians’ offices, convalescent and retirement centers, educational institutions and wellness centers.
Demand
The need for respiratory therapists in New York State is expected to increase 13% between 2022 and 2032.
Salary
The median salary range, as stated by the New York State Department of Labor, for the Capital Region, Central New York, and the Finger Lakes is $81,243 – $82,165.
